Major Diseases Affecting Shrimp Farming

🦠 White Spot Syndrome (WSS)

It is a severe and highly contagious disease affecting crustaceans, particularly shrimp, caused by the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV).

Pathogen:

White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV)

Symptoms:

  • White spots (0.5–3 mm) on carapace and appendages.
  • Reddish discoloration, lethargy, decreased appetite.
  • Mortality can reach 100% within 7–10 days.
  • Control:

  • Strict biosecurity, no cure exists. Remove infected shrimp quickly to stop spread.

🟡Yellow Head Disease (YHD)

It is a highly lethal and contagious viral disease affecting farmed shrimp, particularly the giant tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon).

Pathogen:

Yellow Head Virus (YHV)

Symptoms:

  • Bright yellow cephalothorax.
  • Sudden death, shrimp congregate at pond surface.
  • Death typically 2–4 days after onset, up to 100% mortality.
  • Control:

  • No treatment; prevention via disease-free PL, quarantine, and biosecurity.

🚨 Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND / EMS)

It is a serious bacterial disease affecting shrimp aquaculture, causing significant economic losses due to high mortality rates within the first 30-35 days of culture.

Pathogen:

Toxin-producing Vibrio parahaemolyticus

Symptoms:

  • Pale, shrunken hepatopancreas.
  • Empty gut, soft shell, sometimes black spots on hepatopancreas.
  • Sudden mortality (~10–30 days post-stocking).
  • Control:

  • Good water/feeding management, probiotics, lab testing. Antibiotics under vet supervision

đź”´Vibriosis

It is a disease caused by bacteria of the Vibrio genus, primarily Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. It's a group of infections that can be both mild and serious, ranging from mild gastrointestinal symptoms to severe wound infections.

Pathogen:

Various Vibrio spp.(e.g., V. harveyi, V.anguillarum)

Symptoms:

  • Red or brown discoloration, lesions, ulcers.
  • Luminous shrimp (esp. V. harveyi), lethargy, appetite drop
  • Control:

  • Maintain low stress, stable water quality, probiotics, prudent antibiotic use
Additional Diseases

Impacting Wildlife Health

01

Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV)

A virus causing red tail, soft shell, and high mortality (2–4 weeks post-stocking).

    Symptoms:

  • Red tail, soft shell, high mortality rate.
  • Duration:

  • 2–4 weeks post-stocking.
02

IHHNV (Infectious Hypodermal and Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus)

A virus causing growth deformities, bent bodies, and low survival due to vertical transmission.

    Symptoms:

  • Growth deformation, bent bodies, low survival rate.
  • Transmission:

  • Vertical transmission possible.
03

White Feces Disease (WFD)

A condition causing white fecal strings and skin exfoliation, often triggered by high organic load.

    Symptoms:

  • White fecal strings, skin exfoliation.
  • Risk Factor:

  • Heavy organic load.
04

Black Gill Disease

A disease causing gill darkening and low oxygen efficiency due to microbial or environmental factors.

    Symptoms:

  • Darkened gills, low oxygen efficiency.
  • Cause:

  • Bacteria, fungi, or poor water quality.
